Did Joseph Fiennes’ Commander Fred Waterford Leave The Handmaid’s Tale

Did Joseph Fiennes’ Commander Fred Waterford Leave The Handmaid’s Tale? – The anticipation for the 5th season debut of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is at an all-time high. The Handmaid’s Tale, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s best-selling novel, is set in the dystopian, totalitarian fictional world of Gilead, which is ruled by power-hungry religious fanatics and in which women are cruelly subjugated to their responsibilities as mothers and child-bearers.

They are prohibited from holding property, engaging in employment, handling money, or even reading. In such a society, women who are fertile are referred to as “Handmaids” and placed in the houses of the ruling class, where they are compelled to bear a child for their masters.

Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale will debut on September 14, 2022, at 12 a.m. ET and 3 a.m. PT. The first two episodes of the season will be released, and the other episodes will follow on a weekly schedule.

The dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu concludes with June Osborne doing everything in her power to stop Commander Fred Waterford from achieving his goal of being a free man. With the aid of Commanders Joseph Lawrence and Nick Blaine, June strikes a deal with Mark Tuello in which she arranges for the release of over twenty women from Gilead in exchange for Fred’s travel to Gilead. Fred, who has been aspiring to be a free man, finally finds himself in Nick and June’s care. One must wonder if Joseph Fiennes will appear in any further episodes of the drama when June exacts her revenge on her abuser. Let’s investigate!

What Happened to Commander Fred Waterford

What Happened to Joseph Fiennes’ Commander Fred Waterford?

After being detained by the International Criminal Court, Fred informs the court that in exchange for his release, he will divulge all the information it needs about Gilead, including the crimes that have been committed there, the perpetrators of those crimes, and how the regime functions. June is taken aback when ICC makes a deal with Fred. She feels that the justice she deserves is being withheld when her abuser is set to go as a free man. She contacts Commander Joseph Lawrence when Mark Tuello informs her that there is nothing she can do to change the situation.

According to Cinemaholic, Tuello is offered a prisoner exchange by Lawrence. In exchange for Fred, he consents to release 22 women from Gilead. Tuello presents the plan to his superiors, receives their approval to proceed with it, and then hands Fred over to Lawrence and Nick. Nick delivers Fred to June in a no-man’s-land, much to Fred’s astonishment. She collaborates with Emily and a few other ex-Handmaids to murder Fred. He was killed by beating and then hanged. June even sends Serena Joy Waterford, Fred’s wife, a severed finger from her husband and his wedding ring to inform her that she killed her husband.

The fifth season-opening episode of Fred confirms his death; thus, fans of Joseph Fiennes may be curious as to whether the actor left the dystopian series. Here is what we do know, though.

Did Joseph Fiennes Leave The Handmaid’s Tale

Did Joseph Fiennes’ Commander Fred Waterford Leave the Show?

There is no doubt that Joseph Fiennes left “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Fiennes announced his departure from the show following the conclusion of the fourth season. The actress told Elle, “I’ve grown to so love and cherish my time and the wonderful relationships I have with cast, crew, actors, directors, producers, everyone. […] I’m sad to leave behind such a great company who have raised my game as an actor.

Fiennes had already voiced his regret at leaving the show. The actor told Vanity Fair, “I will miss everyone that I’ve grown to love—my brothers and sisters on the show. I will miss the extraordinary array of talented people, from the camera department to the actors and directors, the writers—it was a privilege to have been on that journey,” the actor told Vanity Fair. “And I’ll miss the fun we had. Believe it or not, we had a lot of fun.

Fiennes might still be around after “The Handmaid’s Tale,” though. Even though the actor has left the show, the separation might only be temporary.

Bruce Miller, the show’s creator, believes that Fiennes’ character’s journey hasn’t ended despite Fred’s passing. Miller said to HollywoodReporter, “[…] the character [Fred] dying doesn’t mean Joe stops coming and being part of the cast. We do have quite a heavy flashback show,” Miller told THR. “[…] it would be much worse if we thought we were never going to see Joe again on set. There’s two different aspects to it: the heartbreak of the story and the heartbreak of real life. And at least the heartbreak of real life is neutered a little bit by knowing we’re going to be seeing him again.”

Fiennes is also open to the idea of having flashback scenes continue Fred’s journey. Fiennes stated, “I would love to see a flashback of the really early years [of Fred]. I’ve always felt, certainly for subsidiary characters, it’s so helpful to have those backstories.”

So, after a pause, we can anticipate seeing the actor return to the show as Fred to appear in flashback scenes.
