Who Is Claudio Reyna

Who is Claudio Reyna?

American soccer player Claudio Reyna Silva was born on July 20, 1973. He currently serves as Austin FC’s sporting director.

He was a former midfielder who captained the US men’s team before quitting international soccer after the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He is regarded by many as one of the greatest players the United States has ever produced. Reyna spent most of his career—all but the final two years—in Europe, playing for clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg, Sunderland, and Manchester City in, and Rangers in the Scottish Premier League. His Major League Soccer career ended in 2008 with the New York Red Bulls, where he served as club captain.

After retiring, Reyna kept up his relationship with the City Football Group and, in 2013, was appointed technical director of New York City FC. He held this role until 2019 before accepting a similar job with Austin FC.

In 1968, Reyna’s father, Miguel, left Argentina for the United States after playing professionally with Los Andes and going through the Independiente youth system. In the 1970s, he relocated to Springfield Township, New Jersey. His father raised Reyna in Livingston, New Jersey, where he was born.

On January 15, 1994, Reyna played in his maiden international match for the United States against Norway. He was on the squad for the FIFA World Cup in 1994, however, he was injured and was unable to play. Reyna did participate in the FIFA World Cups in 1998, 2002, and 2006.

Despite missing the United States’ opening 3-2 upset victory over Portugal in 2002 due to injury, he played a significant role in the team’s next three matches against South Korea, Poland, and CONCACAF nemesis Mexico. The United States fell to eventual runner-up Germany in the quarterfinals. After John Souza and Bert Patenaude, he was the third American to ever be named to the World Cup all-tournament team.

At the World Cup in Germany in 2006, Reyna led the United States once more. Reyna’s 30-yard attempt, which was the only chance the Americans had in the opening match against the Czech Republic and bounced over the post, came with a 1-0 deficit. Reyna sustained a sprained medial collateral ligament in the final group match against Ghana after losing the ball to Haminu Draman, who subsequently dribbled in alone and scored Ghana’s opening goal.

Reyna announced his retirement from the national squad on June 23, 2006, the day after the United States was knocked out of the World Cup. He had 111 caps and eight goals by the end of his international career.

Reyna additionally represented the United States at the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996.

Because he led the American national team, he was occasionally referred to as Captain America in Great Britain.
