9-1-1 Season 5 Episode 17 Recap ‘Hero Complex’

In 9-1-1 Season 5 Episode 17 ‘Hero Complex’, A school bus driver had a heart attack years ago. The poor guy sat at the wheel. Luckily, one of the kids on the bus saved him by performing CPR. That boy grew up to be a local hero. He made new pals.

He was on local TV. He liked being a hero so much that he became a firefighter, and Bobby hired him. Jonah. So did Jonah. He may have liked it too much. Hen suspected Jonah of letting patients get sick so he could heal them at the last minute.

But something went wrong. Sadly, Hen thought that person was dead due to Jonah and went to Chimney to investigate. He didn’t think Jonah was a killer. Hen wouldn’t come to him for anything, he thought. A sharp mind.

She was probably right about Jonah being more than they thought. Hen and Chimney went to work on their day off to sneak into Bobby’s office. They desired Jonah’s file. They read that Jonah moved around a bit before joining the LAFD 14 months ago.

And Jonah’s reports. He was poetic. He also only wrote about his actions, not those of Hen. Jonah’s ego is huge. Hen knew this from the start, so his reports were not shocking. Moving cities every two years did seem odd.

Hen and Chimney contacted paramedics in Jonah’s cities. He was a good paramedic, they said. He was eager to work. The only thing they would say is that he is sometimes odd. He was always odd, even as a child.

Jonah liked to draw people at the guillotine. He was emo before emo. Karen said something important because Hen didn’t know that when she told her about her suspicions. No murderer starts with a murder, she said. Hen pondered it.

She pondered it for a while before looking into Jonah. Not just his paramedic past, but his whole past. She heard about the school bus. How Jonah was a hero. He got the city’s key. He was also given a college scholarship. As a child, Jonah got it all. That gave him a hero complex.

Jonah likes to help. Must be needed. He kills occasionally. He does this by forcing drugs on people, as he did with Claudette. In the end, she did. She only needed air. Jonah gave her injectables even though she didn’t need them. Hen went to Chimney on a whim.

They went to Buck’s to talk to Taylor. They spoke off-the-record. They needed her to help getting footage of the call centre fire. Taylor provided a video. They later saw Jonah inject Claudette.

And it worked. Jonah pushed things to regain his hero status. Like he was as a child. And now he’s addicted to the attention. That’s why he moves every few years. He doesn’t stay long once he’s exhausted his high. So he moves to a new city to start over.

Hen and Chimney found enough evidence to present to Bobby. Hen went to Bobby’s. he and Athena. Bobby did as expected. He informed his superiors, and Jonah was suspended. He couldn’t hurt anyone else.

But when Jonah found out he was suspended, he cried. Hen called. He acted bereft of a lover and promised to “show her“. When Hen heard that, she thought of her family. She called home to warn them to leave.

Replaying the conversation with Karen, who wisely said Jonah wouldn’t be jealous of her. Chimney. Hen’s ex-paramedic partner Chimney Jonah would be jealous of him because he believes Hen threw him over to reclaim Chimney as her partner.

Hen rushed to Chimney’s after talking to her wife. She feared for her pal. She couldn’t find Chimney at his apartment. She found Jonah. Jonah narcosis. Jonah took her elsewhere. When Hen awoke, she was bound to a chair and Chimney to a table.

Jonah kept injecting Chimney with something to stop his heart, only to inject him with something else to restart it. He was doing it when Hen noticed Chimney approaching. Delaying Chimney’s release from his restraints allowed her to grab the defibrillator.

When Jonah went to check on him, Chimney stunned him. When Chimney escaped his restraints, the cops arrived. Karen contacted them. Bobby arrived and punched Jonah a few times before being restrained. A serial killer was operating in their backyard.

It didn’t help that Taylor used her insider knowledge to name and shame Jonah before anyone else. Buck was displeased with her. And she couldn’t. She couldn’t.
