Chris Smith’s latest real crime docuseries, Bad Vegan: Fame, Fraud, and Fugitives., premiered on Netflix. Before Bad Vegan, Smith directed FYRE and worked on Tiger King as a producer. Despite his credentials, this may be his most bizarre case to date.
Sarma Melngailis made news once more in 2015, but this time it wasn’t for the success of her vegan empire or a cookbook; it was for being accused of stealing from her company.
According to Netflix’s ‘Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives,’ she then went on the run with her husband Anthony Strangis, who is the reason she got herself into this situation in the first place.
So, if you’re interested in learning more about their partnership, including the current status of their relationship, don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

Sarma and Anthony’s Journey at Bad Vegan
Sarma Melngailis, the proprietor of Pure Food and Wine, a vegan restaurant focused on raw yet nutritious meals, had a lot of famous friends, including Alec Baldwin. That’s significant because she met Anthony Strangis, who went by the stage name Shane Fox at the time, through Alec on Twitter, where he’d had a few amusing exchanges with the actor.
From there, he and Sarma met over Words With Friends and quickly fell in love, despite the fact that they were long-distance, with her in New York City and him in Massachusetts.
Sarma gave Anthony a chance despite the fact that their first face-to-face encounter in November 2011 didn’t go as planned, especially because Anthony wasn’t as tough as he’d portrayed online.
Despite having made his intentions plain, his actions resulted in her being pregnant a few weeks later, prompting her to not only have an abortion but also to distance herself from him.
Nonetheless, he managed to entice her back into his orbit within months, promising her financial security, the immortality of her pet dog Leon, and general contentment, as depicted in the series.
The fact that Sarma didn’t know Anthony’s real name until later and that he was unclear about his occupation didn’t appear to bother her, but that’s because she felt it was for her own safety.
Things began to alter after they married in November 2012, and the worst part was that it happened so slowly that the restauranter didn’t realise until it was too late.
Because of his deception, she lost her money, her business, and practically all sense of herself, according to the Netflix original, only to end up in prison for four months.

Sarma and Anthony: Are They Still Together?
In May 2018, Sarma Melngailis filed for divorce from Anthony Strangis (or Shane Fox, or Michael Caledonia), indicating that they are no longer together in any way, shape, or form. ‘Bad Vegan‘ says that they are still in touch while remaining amicable, despite the fact that she hasn’t openly discussed it other than hinting she isn’t in love with him.
After all, not only did Anthony admit to missing Sarma in their 2019 phone call – nearly two years after she was released from prison – but he was also proud of his ability to still make her laugh.
According to the series, Anthony told Sarma, “I’ve been all over the world, in all these different countries, and I’ve met all sorts of individuals over a whole lot of years.” “I really like you.”
Okay, you’re the smartest person I’ve ever met. And you’re the most lovely thing I’ve ever seen.” Furthermore, it is believed that not only has Sarma been unable to reconcile with her past, but she has also not totally moved on from it, leaving the door open for various things Anthony had led her to think.
The Netflix original show Bad Vegan: Fame, Fraud, and Fugitives is now available to stream.
