James “Jim” Mervin Nibbe was a young Minnesota man born in 1983 who grew up in Lake Crystal and graduated from Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School in 2002. Following graduation, Jim worked as a handyman for Hank and Jan Roelofs from eighth grade until college; after that, he pursued an apprenticeship with Maple River Electric beginning October 5, 2005.
Jim was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and member of several clubs, such as Garden City Rod and Gun Club, Minnesota Pheasant Inc.-Blue Earth County Chapter, Ducks Unlimited-Lake Crystal Chapter, and Future Farmers of America. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, kayaking, and working out with his dog; he also enjoyed golfing, volleyball, and DIY projects. On May 24th, 2008, Jim wed Jennifer Lee Gilman in Lake Crystal.
On August 31, 2010, Jennifer called 911 with a distressed report of Jim being killed during a home invasion. She claimed an intruder had entered their residence through an unlocked door and shot Jim while she was alone in the bathroom. Despite efforts from her defense team, a doctor determined Jennifer competent to stand trial.
Jennifer testified during the trial that Jim had physically and sexually assaulted her, leaving her with PTSD. Unfortunately, prosecutors could not verify her claims since she never reported them to the police. To further complicate matters, it was discovered after Jim’s passing that Jim was HIV and Hepatitis-positive. In June 2012, Jennifer pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of 17 years in prison with 102 months of supervised release.
Jennifer was ordered to pay $11,400 in funeral costs as part of her sentence. Jim’s heirs filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2014, seeking $1 million. After being ordered to pay $220,000, Jennifer apologized to the family. She is currently serving her sentence at Minnesota Correctional Facility – Shakopee and is expected to be released between August 2027 and February 2036.
