The Menu Ending, Explained – “The Menu” is a 2022 American dark comedy horror movie that was written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy and was produced by Adam McKay, Betsy Koch, and Will Ferrell. It was directed by Mark Mylod and stars Will Tracy as the title character. Ralph Fiennes plays a famous chef in the film, and Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Reed Birney, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo play guests who frequent his upscale eatery.

On September 10, 2022, The Menu had its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. On November 18, 2022, Searchlight Pictures released The Menu in the US. On a $30 million budget, the movie made over $73 million worldwide and garnered generally favourable reviews. So what takes place? Does everyone really pass away? ‘The Menu’ Plot Summary: What Is The Film About?

Margot Mills and her date Tyler take a boat to Hawthorne, a posh eatery run by well-known chef Julian Slowik that is situated on a secluded island. The meal will also feature cuisine critic Lillian, her editor Ted, the affluent Richard and Anne, movie star George and his personal assistant Felicity, the business partners Soren, Dave, and Bryce, as well as Julian’s alcoholic mother. Elsa, the restaurant’s maître d’hôtel, gives the group a tour of the island while pointing out that Margot was not Tyler’s invited guest for the evening.

As dinner is served, Julian introduces each course while delivering an ever-more frightening monologue about it. Each guest’s secrets—from affairs to money laundering—are gradually made public as the evening progresses. A sous chef commits suicide during the fourth meal in full view of the guests, and a staff member slashes Richard’s ring finger when he tries to flee. The restaurant’s principal investor, who is also Soren, Dave, and Bryce’s boss, is drowned in front of the diners after the fourth dish. Julian permits guests to try to flee at various moments throughout the evening, but the staff always manages to catch and bring them back.

Julian admits that all of the visitors were chosen either because they helped him lose his love for his work or because they profit from artisans and workers like him and his crew. He declares that everyone here will be dead by the end of the night. Julian offers Margot the option of dying with the crew or the guests because her arrival was unanticipated.

It is revealed that Margot is an escort named Erin, whom Tyler has hired for the evening and who Richard has previously employed. Julian explains that Tyler specifically invited Margot, knowing that she would pass away, and that Tyler knew the evening would conclude with everyone’s demise. Tyler is made to cook in front of Julian, who makes fun of his cuisine and then tells him to hang himself. Julian asks Margot to go get a barrel that is needed for dessert.

When Margot enters Julian’s home undercover, Elsa attacks her. Margot stabs Elsa in the neck to end her life. Margot discovers newspaper articles about Julian’s previous life in a fast-food restaurant. She then makes a rescue call, gets a radio, and brings the barrel back to the eatery. After arriving off his boat, a Coast Guard officer discloses that he is actually a line cook and returns to the kitchen.

Margot makes fun of Julian’s food while expressing her continued hunger. Margot requests a cheeseburger and fries when Julian asks what she would like to eat, and Julian makes the meal according to her demands. After enjoying a mouthful, Margot compliments his cooking and asks if she can have it “to go”. After packing the meal for her, Julian and the staff let her go. Margot leaves the island by boarding a nearby Coast Guard boat.

The dessert is an upscale version of s’mores; the staff covers the floor with graham cracker crumbs and dresses the guests in chocolate-covered marshmallow stoles and hats. Then Julian makes good on his fatal vow by setting the restaurant on fire, igniting the barrel, and killing the patrons, the workers, and himself. Margot takes a bite of her hamburger while watching from the boat and wipes her mouth with a piece of the menu.

The Menu Ending Explained: Does Everyone Die?

Everything falls apart after egotistical chef Julian Slowik declares that everyone will pass away before the night’s end. He makes the snooty visitors see and partake in many terrible activities while torturing them. All of the guests either helped him lose interest in his craft or currently make a life by taking advantage of artisans like him.

Julian clearly has feelings for Margot, who surprisingly turns out to be an escort named Erin. She rejects the chance to consume his meal and refuses to fall for the marketing gimmick. Julian comes to the conclusion that she is neither rich nor arrogant after learning that she too works in the service sector. She shouldn’t be at Hawthorne, therefore.

Why does he ultimately permit Margot to leave the island? What changed from his original plan for her to die alongside the staff?

Margot dares chef Julian to prepare her an American institution: a cheeseburger and fries, after ridiculing his meals and whining that she’s still hungry. Julian is immediately brought back to his fast food roots and the reasons he fell in love with cooking by the straightforward request. After taking a bite, Margot asks Julian if she may take it to go. Julian packs it and lets her go.

After letting Margot leave, Chef Julian tells the diners that the dessert is an enhanced s’mores dish. The kitchen staff swiftly covers the floor with graham cracker crumbs and dresses the visitors in little marshmallow capes and chocolate hats. Then Julian sets the eatery on fire, turning the customers into human s’mores. What happened to Tyler in ‘The Menu’?

Tyler demonstrates that he is an uncaring rich jerk who doesn’t care who he hurts as long as he gets what he wants by withholding the truth from everyone. Chef Julian ultimately decides to murder Tyler, but not before forcing him to cook in front of the entire restaurant. He presents a dish that Julian strongly condemns. Tyler, as a result, commits suicide in a storage room.

Mark Mylod commented on why the visitors had effectively come to terms with death.

Despite giving his guests numerous opportunities to depart Hawthorne and the isolated island, chef Julian’s guests ultimately accept their destiny after learning that he had information on them that they would prefer to have kept private. He is aware that each diner values their reputation above all else and would rather die than face the repercussions of their dirty behaviour.

Director Mark Mylod spoke with Den of Geek after the movie’s debut to further explain why none of the snobby visitors made a conscious effort to leave the island. From Chef Slowik’s perspective, he said, “they’re not getting their comeuppance; instead, they’re getting liberty and regeneration.”

“The sheer futility of escape mixed with the journey they’ve been on, the whisper in the air of Slowik’s comments throughout that evening, over the dinner, the combination of those two components is just driving them to a position of absolute naked subjugation,” the filmmaker concluded.
