Sarma Melngailis, Anthony Strangis’ ex-wife, is hardly the person to question if you want to discover what he does for a living. In Netflix’s new four-part docuseries Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives, the former New York City restaurateur explains, “I wouldn’t be able to give you a straight answer because I never really knew.” “Anthony was always very enigmatic about who he was and what he did.”
‘Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives.,’ a Netflix documentary about vegan restauranteur Sarma Melngailis’ rise and collapse, illustrates that sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.
After all, she maintains that her marriage to Anthony Strangis (or Shane Fox) was the catalyst for her losing not only her money and career, but also herself.

Was Anthony Strangis an actual Navy SEAL?
According to both Sarma Melngailis and Stacy Avery Strangis in the series, Anthony Strangis almost always claims to have served in the Navy SEALS or the “military” in some capacity.
However, the women were only truly convinced of the same when his father – a Massachusetts police officer who also happens to be an avid gambler – apparently validated his storey to a tee.
Stacy even thought he’d been wounded in the chest in the line of duty, only to discover that the bandages were only “taping his man boobs down.”
In the Netflix original, Sarma said, “[Anthony] was always very mysterious about who he was, what his career was.” He basically convinced her that “he was involved in some sort of like black ops; like the stuff that nobody writes about, that’s kind of unofficial,” as he put it.
That’s because he’d frequently travel for long periods of time without warning and supposedly never explicitly addressed any of her queries, leaving her feeling as if she shouldn’t even try to dig further for her own safety.
The most credible feature, according to Sarma, was that “his computer was well password protected.” I’d walk in, and he’d be hiding something. Or there was a seal on his laptop that looked like it belonged to the CIA or something, and he had to enter a passcode.”
Everything about Sarma hinted to him being an officer, from watching him analyse “drone footage” to being in his car while he procured a manilla packet full of diamonds (allegedly from evidence) to hearing the way he spoke about his job.
“If you ask me, ‘What does [Anthony] do?’ I’ll tell you what he does.” Because I’ve never actually known, I wouldn’t be able to give you a straight response. In the docuseries, his now ex-wife admitted, “He never gave me a straight answer.”
In fact, no one knows what his true occupation was/is because he hasn’t revealed it to anyone — all he’s ever said is that he was a former Navy SEAL official or ex-military, with scars to prove it.
As a result, because there is no database for such officials that we can search, it’s impossible to say if he actually served the country or not.
