Angela Ganote, Who is She?
Angela Ganote is an Indiana University graduate who grew up in Brownsburg. She joined Fox59 in 2001 after serving as a news reporter at WLFI in Lafayette, WSBT in South Bend, and WCMH in Columbus, Ohio. While Angela had worked on a number of groundbreaking stories, she came across one that was particularly peculiar when, in May 2015, a woman who went by the name “Carrie” reached her with a story about discovering she was a donor baby with seven half-siblings.
“In the blink of an eye, I changed from being an only child to having at least eight siblings… I’d like to know whether I have any further siblings. I’d like to build a friendship with them. “I’d like to find out who my biological father is,” Carrie told Angela. In May 2015, the reporter conducted interviews with two of the woman’s half-sisters and released an online story.
Jacoba Ballard, who discovered that she and her half-siblings were all donor babies with the same biological father, Dr. Donald Cline, went by the name Carrie. Jacoba’s mother Debbie and many others had been treated by the renowned Indianapolis fertility expert, who, unbeknownst to them, had inseminated them with his own sperm rather than a conventional donor’s.
As a result, Jacoba reached out to Angela over Facebook and shared all of the proof she had. After being shocked by this revelation, she decided to look into the situation further and called the Attorney General’s (AG) office, but after receiving no answer, she addressed Marion County prosecutor Tim Delaney.
Not only that, but Angela decided to interview Dr. Cline in the summer of 2016 because he lied on the form AG handed him after Jacoba filed a complaint. According to the documentary, he allegedly threatened her with his gun during the interview and claimed unequivocally that he did not believe he was the father of the children.
Dr. Cline went on to say that he had recently assisted families who were having trouble conceiving. Jacoba and her half-siblings’ DNA tests afterwards matched with his, proving that he had lied to the AG about not using his sperm samples.
Dr. Cline was charged with two counts of felony obstruction of justice in September 2016, and Angela’s article on the case assisted many of his donor offspring, including Matthew White, in identifying him and coming forward. Despite his horrible deeds, Dr. Cline was never charged with rape or donor fraud in Indianapolis owing to a lack of legislation.
He pleaded guilty to his charges in December 2017 and was sentenced to pay a $500 fine. Surprisingly, the court suspended Dr. Cline’s one-year sentence, citing his advanced age and the community’s sympathy.
