In June 2019, Anthony Templet, then 17, shot and murdered his father after the two had an early-morning altercation, according to the Netflix series, which promises viewers an “unprecedented” look at an “unbelievable, never-been-told-before true story.”

Who is Anthony Templet and How Did He Kill His Father?
In June 2019, 20-year-old Louisianan Anthony Templet shot and killed his father, Burt Templet, inside their house.
Although Anthony Joseph Templet was born in Texas, he spent most of his formative years in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his existence was regrettably neither warm nor secure according to the three-part original. After more than a few significant domestic fights caused by his maltreatment, his father, Burt, reportedly took him away from his mother when he was 5 years old. Burt’s control didn’t end there, though.
According to the docuseries, he actually succeeded in persuading the toddler that his mother didn’t want or care for him since she had her own problems, effectively guaranteeing that he never brought up the subject again.
Thus, Anthony was left in the care of his father, who, according to the production, did not only forbid him from ever enrolling in school but also paid little attention to his general growth. His stepmother Susan allegedly taught him to read and write when he was 10 years old, along with a few other fundamentals, but he was still not permitted to learn anything more than that.
As if that weren’t bad enough, the Netflix series reveals that he was also forbidden from having companions and that every step he made was monitored by cameras or a phone GPS, all of which hampered his social development.
But according to Anthony’s account in “I Just Killed My Dad,” it was the ongoing verbal, emotional, and physical abuse that finally broke him down on the fateful June 3, 2019. After an altercation that started after Burt checked the former’s phone in the early morning hours, the then-17-year-old decided he wanted to end it all. Because the locked door was being banged on, he went into his father’s bedroom and grabbed the two revolvers kept there. When he came out, he pulled the trigger three times (on one gun) because the locked door was being banged upon.
Although Anthony did contact 911 right away, things were complicated by the fact that he originally came off as insensitive and unapologetic and had even chased his father into the toilet after the first shooting. After all, Burt claimed self-defense despite having virtually pleaded with his son not to shoot again before he fired twice more (the third bullet missed). When Burt succumbed to his injuries, the teen’s attempted manslaughter charge was amended to manslaughter; nevertheless, the grand jury later indicted him for second-degree murder.
Natasha, Anthony’s sister, told WAFB in 2019 that she had just learned where he was after his arrest for manslaughter. “After 11 years of waiting to hear if my brother was still alive, he is located,” she said.
“He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father. My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man. He snatched him from our home. Burt and my mom were together for about ten years, and it was extremely violent,” she added.
What Happened to Anthony Templet and Where Is He Now?
Since facts surrounding Anthony’s experiences or Burt’s conduct were initially unknown, it was first believed that Anthony had killed his father in a cold-blooded manner. Still, public opinion began to change as the truth came to light. He was eventually given assistance and access to psychiatrists, and his biological mother could locate him (while he was in jail) (who deemed him no threat to society).
On December 19, 2019, he was permitted to be freed on a smaller $50,000 bail with a few conditions, including a strict curfew and wearing a GPS device at all times. The District Attorney’s Office and Anthony’s defense attorney agreed to offer the teen a negligent homicide plea as more and more horrific material came to light. Thus, in early March 2021, he entered a plea of no contest, for which he was given five years of probation with credit for time already served, as well as orders to complete high school, attend counseling, and either take up employment or enroll in full-time education.
The assistant district attorney added, “What would time in jail do for this young man who has never actually had a chance to study, to make friends, or to be in the world.” What result would that produce? I simply believe that he would never be able to be effective because of it.
Therefore, even if it’s not entirely clear what Anthony is doing these days because he prefers to avoid the spotlight, it seems he’s making an effort to lead a normal life. As far as we know, he still resides in Louisiana and is working to create a new life for himself without the interference of anyone else. He now only needs some direction and his future to succeed.
In the documentary, Anthony noted, “Feeling in charge of your life is incredibly crucial. You get your freedom stripped away from you in jail, and it just kind of made me realize that… I just want to be normal. I just want to live normally and be happy and just move on.”
