1923 Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
The first scene of the episode shows Helen Mirren’s character Cara Dutton pushing a cart to the neighborhood post office. She learns that Spencer has not yet sent a letter. When Cara came back, she treated Jacob Dutton’s injuries. Harrison Ford’s Jacob, who Banner Creighton shot, is gradually recovering. In everything, Jack Dutton takes over the management of the Yellowstone Ranch.
Even though the Dutton family is present for the meal, Emma Dutton, played by Marley Shelton, is still mourning the death of her husband, John Dutton. Father Renaud, played by Sebastian Roché, discovers the remains of Sisters Mary and Alice, who had recently gone away, at the Christian boarding school for Native Americans. Father Renaud thinks Teonna Rainwater, who has also been reported missing, is responsible for the fatalities. Father Renaud sends his soldiers to grab Teonna so that he can continue questioning her after questioning and assaulting Teonna’s cousin.
Emma stays clear of them all. She reassures Jack Dutton that Elizabeth will be there for him if he needs her and expresses confidence in his ability to care for himself now that he is an adult. Emma withdraws to the seclusion of the Dutton house. She makes it clear that she isn’t interested in Cara’s advice despite her efforts to be revived. That evening, despite Cara’s best attempts, Emma takes her own life. The Duttons hold a simple funeral service for Emma. With the aid of his doctors, Jacob starts to recuperate during this time, and for the first time since being wounded, he walks.
Spencer and Alexandra journey by boat from Nairobi, Kenya, through Africa, searching for a method to reach the United States. He tries to get a room aboard the RMS Franconia but soon learns it has a hostile environment. Spencer has decided that it would be unwise of him to take Alexandra aboard the ship. Therefore he is researching other modes of transportation. Spencer meets tug boat captain Lucca in Africa, and the two get along immediately. Lucca is elderly and in poor health. As a direct result of this, he is searching for a deckhand to work with him.
Meanwhile, Teonna keeps moving over the plains, but she encounters problems when a wolf attacks her at night. Teonna climbs a mountain rock to get through the night. The following morning, Teonna is saved by Hank, a Native American man who knows Teonna’s father. However, Alexandra is successful in convincing Spencer to go with her. Jack is forced to sell his cows at Yellowstone Farm in the interim to cut down on his spending.
The Suez Canal is where Captain Lucca is headed. Lucca offers Spencer a position as a deckhand on his ship on the grounds that Spencer is confident in his abilities to find a risk-free way to London through the Suez Canal. On the other side, he tries to flee from Alexandra out of concern for her. The future of Jack and Elizabeth’s relationship was a point of contention. In contrast, Jack assures Elizabeth that he intends for them to live together for the remainder of their lives. After exchanging vows, Jack and Elizabeth declare their union as husband and wife. Elizabeth informs Cara that she is expecting a child in the kitchen, and the two ladies start planning their wedding immediately.
Spencer and Alexandra use a ship’s radio to write a letter to Montana and give it to Cara, informing her of their impending arrival. After the message was given, Spencer and Alexandra left with Lucca to begin their quest. However, they are perilously near to crashing into a ghost ship whose entire crew has already died. Lucca changes the course of his boat to get out of the collision. After some time, Lucca tells the couple the legend of the Zabrina, a phantom ship. So that the couple may relax on the deck, Lucca does the night shift.
Cara and Jacob discuss Jacob’s recovery when they are in Montana. In the end, Jacob persuades Jack to back off from confronting Banner Creighton. Cara runs across Donald Whitfield, played by Timothy Dalton, by luck during this time, and he asks to meet with Jacob Dutton. On the other hand, Cara convinces Whitfield that Jacob is still alive and that the Yellowstone Ranch is still in operation. She receives a message from Spencer following the encounter.
Spencer awakens at the Ship at midnight to see that the ship’s engines have been shut off. Unfortunately, he discovers that Lucca passed away after succumbing to his illness. The boat is also headed directly for a collision with a ghost ship. However, he needs instruction from more seasoned sailors because he is a beginning. He is forced to take the helm and tries to direct the boat away from the path of the incoming ship. Spencer is making every effort to avoid running into the approaching ship.
Spencer can communicate with Cambridge through the radio. He receives assistance from a ship’s crew member, but it is too late for him to steer the boat clear of peril. The phantom ship and the tugboat come into contact. Spencer and Alexandra’s boat has capsized, and since neither of them has been found, it appears that they have both died. The ghost ship does not show in the last shot despite their ship being completely destroyed.
