Toussaint began working for a Merchant Bank before quitting and relocating to the US to pursue acting.

In 1990, he joined a theater company and played the Genie in Aladdin at the Churchill Theater in his first professional performance. He also performed in The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth for The Royal Shakespeare Company under the direction of Michael Boyd.

In The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, he made his professional debut as Steve Dixie in 1994. When it was revealed that Toussaint would be playing Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon on February 11, 2021, the 57-year-old actor expressed his happiness and surprise in an interview with The Guardian.
