The 2006 Labor Day weekend tragedy instilled terror among the otherwise tranquil neighbourhood. But around three years later, Dr. Mark Wangler, Kathy’s husband, was found guilty of the murder.
On the surface, the couple’s marriage appeared to be flawless enough to prevent any underlying wickedness. Aaron Wangler, the younger son of Kathy and Mark, and the anesthesiologist’s new spouse Esther Wangler appear to concur on this. The Wangler family continues to support Mark’s innocence. The jury and the prosecution disagree, though.

How Did Kathy Wangler Die?
Kathleen, the oldest of her five siblings, was born in Mercer County, Ohio, in May 1958. She was close to her family when she was little and protected everyone. When they were both in their twenties, Kathy married Mark Wangler and assisted him in paying for medical school. In her thirties, Kathy returned to school to earn a business degree. They have two boys, Nathan and Aaron. The family settled into a nice existence in Lima, Ohio, at the time.
On September 4, 2006, at around 5:17 AM, Mark called 911 to report that his wife, who was 48 at the time, had experienced a seizure. When the carbon monoxide alarm went off, she was awakened while Mark was still asleep in the master bedroom below. The authorities arrived to discover Kathy with no pulse, and she was pronounced dead hours later. The police concluded their investigation by classifying the incident as a homicide and determining that the cause of death was acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
Who Killed Kathy Wangler and Why?
Anesthesiologist Mark told the authorities that when he first woke up, he experienced nausea and disorientation, which are typical symptoms of CO poisoning. He asserted that the water heater’s malfunction had allowed CO to enter the home’s air ducts. So Mark had to go early to work, while Kathy stayed up, so they spent the night in separate bedrooms. Although the death appeared to be an accident, the officials weren’t sure. They required additional proof to refute this, though.
Dr. Wangler said, “The next thing that I remember is waking up – or being woken up by an alarm. We had the carbon monoxide alarm down in the basement. I was nauseated. I remember vomiting somewhere along the line as I was going through the house. And I then go up to check on Kathy. …She was sleeping on one of those inflatable mattresses.”
Following Kathy’s passing, Mark started dating a friend, Esther Erkman, and they got married about 14 months later. Mark later acknowledged that the later years of his marriage to Kathy had not always been smooth. He claimed they hadn’t discussed a separation but were visiting a marriage counsellor. Mark Wangler added that Kathy had a hidden bank account and credit card debt. Diane, Kathy’s sister, allegedly stated that the mother of two acknowledged her marriage was having problems.
Sherry, a friend of Kathy’s, remarked, “She had told me that her husband was out to destroy her – financially, emotionally, psychologically, in the community, at her church. That he was in the process of working to destroy her.”
Mark’s actions generally raised suspicions in the eyes of the authorities. They believed it too lucky that Mark was dozing off with the windows open when Kathy passed away. Additionally, she was declared dead about half an hour before the 911 call.
The gas company employees investigated the water heater and the furnace but were unable to discover any issues; neither equipment was emitting excessive amounts of CO. This placed doubt on Mark’s story of the heater malfunctioning. Because divorce was not ideal for a devout guy in a religious community, the prosecution claimed that he killed Kathy to avoid getting a divorce.

They thought about the prospect that CO poisoning might be brought on by purposely directing car exhaust into the air ducts. Additionally, there was evidence from Mark’s journal, where he discussed his marital issues with Kathy. The quote said, “Suicide thoughts are starting to come back a little stronger. Satan is employing car exhaust as a new method of attack. The case went to trial even though the source of CO was not clearly identified.
Jurgen Waldick, the prosecutor for Allen County, expressed scepticism about Mark’s account and claimed that he acted strangely throughout the 911 call. Waldick remarked, “At the insistence of the 911 operator only does he go back and checks to see whether she has a pulse or whether or not she is breathing.”
Sherry Miller, a friend of Kathy’s, said, “She looked right into your heart. And if you were a good person she was gonna pull you right into hers, and she was gonna love you with everything she had.”
Sister of Kathy Joanne said, “She was always looking out for everybody. She was a good sister, everybody was really close.”
What Happened to Dr. Mark Wangler and Where Is He Now?
At trial, Mark’s attorneys argued that the reason for his actions when he discovered Kathy was that his oxygen levels were low and that the death was a sad accident. Nevertheless, Mark was convicted guilty of aggravated murder and given a 25–life sentence in March 2011.
“Mark, you senselessly robbed Kathy of her many most valuable moments,” Sarah, Kathy’s mother, told him in court. “Her two kids, Nathan and Aaron.” She adored them and gave everything she had to them. According to prison records, Mark remains a prisoner at Ohio’s Marion Correctional Institution. In 2036, he will be able to apply for parole.
