Why did Chacey Poynter Kill Her Husband, Robert Poynter?
When Chacey started planning her husband’s murder with Michael Garza, one of the numerous men she was courting at the time, the couple, who had been married since 2009, apparently went through a divorce. She said that her spouse had verbally and physically abused her and threatened to take their daughter away from her.
The day before the homicide, Chacey allegedly spoke with Michael and said, “I can’t love you unless Robert is out of the picture.”
She eventually admitted to the crime to the police, saying that she had sex with Garza the day after the shooting at his residence and that they talked about how to make it look like a break-in. To trick her husband into falling victim to a cunning trap, Poynter stated that her Jeep was stuck in the mud.
Chacey Poynter later claimed in court that she merely wanted to “scare” her husband and had never planned for him to pass away. But despite her requests for him to cease, Graza persisted in his actions. When Chacey tried to call 911, he allegedly shot Robert once in the head and threw her cellphone into a puddle.

However, Chacey allegedly lied to the police when she guided them to her husband’s body when they first arrived at the site. The 29-year-old informed authorities that while her husband was helping her with the jeep, an unknown male who had been hiding in the shadows of the bushes approached and fatally shot him. She gradually began to alter the story before finally confessing.
Later, according to Chacey, “I didn’t want him dead. I just – I wanted him to know what it’s like to be bullied all the time.”
Where Is Chacey Poynter Now?
In her trial before a jury in 2019, Chacey Poynter was accused of using sex and deceit to coerce Michael Garza, her accomplice in the murder, into carrying out all the dirty work. Even later that day, she intended to have sex with another partner.
Only Garza apparently agreed when she allegedly tried to convince several lovers to kill Robert. They asserted that Poynter had felt compelled to intervene because Robert was probably planning to file for divorce. A claim on Robert’s $680,000 life insurance policy was something else she wanted to do.
After a two-week trial, Chacey Poynter, who was 32 at the time, was found guilty of capital murder. She was given a life sentence without the possibility of release and is presently being held in the Christina Melton Crain Unit of the Texas prison system. Michael Graza, who received a similar 99-year prison term, is incarcerated at the Barry Telford Unit in Bowie County, Texas.
This Friday, August 26, 2022, at 10 p.m. ET, NBC Dateline will broadcast its forthcoming episode, “Out of the Darkness.”
