Who Was Robert Poynter and How Did He Die?
Robert Poynter, a veteran firefighter, was shot in the head and died as a result. The Royse City police department was directed to the remote, muddy road where Robert Poynter was fatally shot after receiving a terrifying 911 call in the late hours of September 9, 2016, to which officers reacted quickly. In the passenger seat of his wife, Chacey’s jeep, the 47-year-old former captain of the University Park Fire Department, was lifeless.
Robert was found with a single, fatal gunshot wound to the head. According to his wife, who just happened to be there, Robert was helping her move the jeep that had been stuck in the mud when an unknown man emerged from the woods and shot him in the head. Chacey Poynter was agitated and out of breath.

The first findings made by the police at the crime scene, which determined that a single shot to the head had killed Robert, were supported by the medical examiner’s report. Even though there was no doubt as to how Robert died, it would take years for the perpetrator and the motives for the murder to be identified.
When questioned, Chacey admitted to the authorities that their marriage was far from perfect and that the couple had planned to meet at a nearby restaurant the night of the murder to discuss their issues. She took a wrong turn, though, and her car became stuck on the slick road. She had to make a call to Robert for assistance. A man suddenly emerged from the shadowy bushes and shot her husband as soon as he arrived. Strangely, they had nothing stolen.
Who Killed Robert Poynter and Why?
Authorities began looking into the killing concerning their failing marriage as Chacey Poynter’s accounts of the evening changed throughout the following weeks.
In a statement, Chacey disclosed that the unnamed shooter was actually one of her several partners. After searching her phone, police eventually found thousands of communications she had sent and received from her alleged lovers. However, one chat with Michael Graza—the person she claimed shot her husband—stands out. Before Robert Poynter’s murder, Chacey had texted Graza and said, “I can’t love you unless Robert is out of the picture.”
Eventually, Chacey admitted that she had only intended to “scare” her husband after learning that he was ready to file for divorce due to her infidelity. She said that Graza acted independently after ignoring her attempts to stop him. Then, at 29 years old, the man reportedly admitted, “I didn’t want him dead. I just – I wanted him to know what it’s like to be bullied all the time.“
Where Are Chacey Poynter and Michael Graza Now?
The alleged gunman was charged with killing Robert Poynter, while his wife was accused of plotting a murder. During the 2018 trial, Michael Graza was found guilty and given a 99-year sentence. Chacey was put on trial in 2019. According to the prosecution, she murdered her husband to collect the $680,000 value of his life insurance policy. Chacey Poynter received a life sentence without the chance of release. She is currently detained in the Texas prison system’s Christina Melton Crain Unit.
