AMC‘s supernatural horror thriller drama Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice is a spellbinding story that takes viewers into a dark world of witchcraft, family secrets and betrayal. Based on Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy, the show was made by Esta Spalding and Michelle Ashford and tells the scary story of the Mayfair family. Rowan Fielding, played by Alexandra Daddario, is a neurosurgeon who finds out a shocking link between her and the Mayfair witches. The gothic appeal of the story grows as the mystery surrounding the tragic death of Annabeth Gish‘s character, Deirdre Mayfair, is solved. Who killed Deirdre, though? Let’s learn more about her life and the shocking truth about how she died.
What Deirdre Mayfair Did in Her Life
There are both beautiful and sad parts to Deirdre Mayfair’s life. She is Rowan Fielding’s real mother and a very important person in the Mayfair family history. Her story starts with a quick romance at a party her uncle, Cortland Mayfair (Harry Hamlin) is throwing. She meets Patrick, a young man, with the help of the mysterious and always-present Lasher (Jack Huston). They have a short but passionate encounter. She is happy for a short time, though, because the next morning Patrick is found dead, and Deirdre finds out she is pregnant.
Deirdre’s life goes downhill when she is used as a pawn in the dark history of the Mayfair family. Her aunt Carlotta locks her up in the family ancestral home because she doesn’t want Deirdre to know about her relationship with Lasher. Deirdre is still tied to Lasher by a magical necklace her mother gave her, even though she tries desperately to get away, including a failed suicide attempt. The necklace, which represents Lasher’s control over the Mayfairs, makes their bond stronger and stops Deirdre from breaking away from his control.
It’s been more than twenty years, and Deirdre is still stuck in the Mayfair house and getting electroshock treatments in a hospital. Deirdre wakes up determined to get back together with her daughter Rowan after getting her necklace back and talking to Lasher again. Her newfound freedom doesn’t last long, though, which is sad.

The Death of Deirdre Mayfair
There is a horrible end for Deirdre in Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 4 called “Curiouser and Curiouser.” Deirdre follows Rowan to the Pontchartrain Hotel after getting away from Carlotta’s tight grip. Deirdre’s life is cut short just as the two are about to meet again after a long time apart. Her throat has been—brutally cut and she is found in the elevator. It is a shocking and heartbreaking scene.
At first, Lasher, the scary shape-shifting demon who has a long history with the Mayfair family, is seen as the most likely suspect. Because he is mean and likes to manipulate people, he is an obvious suspect. But Rowan’s clairvoyant friend Ciprien Grieve (Tongayi Chirisa) uses his gifts to find out what’s really going on. Through his investigation, Ciprien learns that Deirdre’s killer is not a ghost or other supernatural being, but a hired killer who did the killing.
Who killed Deirdre?
When the killer of Deirdre is revealed, the attention turns to Carlotta Mayfair, who has long wanted to get rid of Lasher’s control over the family. Carlotta is a prime suspect because she did so many bad things, like setting fires and trying to kill Rowan. Because she hates Lasher and wants to protect the “sanctity” of the Mayfair family—it’s possible that she did the horrible thing.
To everyone’s surprise, though, it turns out that Cortland Mayfair was really the one who planned Deirdre’s murder. In contrast to the caring character in Anne Rice’s books—Cortland is portrayed in this series as a sneaky and self-centered bad guy. He wants to keep his power and establish himself in the Mayfair family which drives him. Cortland gets rid of a possible threat and moves his own dark agenda forward by planning—Deirdre’s death.
