All American on the CW is back, but it’s not the same show you remember. On the first episode of Season 7, there are new characters, a lot of drama, and a fresh start. There’s a sense of anticipation at the start of the episode as the show teases a soft reboot that will change things for the beloved show. There will be a new chapter in the All American universe but only a few familiar faces will be back as regulars. But as the episode goes on, it becomes clear that the show’s main ideas—family, ambition, and strength—have not changed even though the characters have.
Let’s talk about the Season 7 premiere, which is called “New Beginnings.”
The Jeremy Family: A New Story
The Jeremy family is introduced in this episode. They will play a big role in this new season. Cassius Jeremy, played by Osy Ikhile, is a well-known football coach. He lives with his wife Ava and their talented high school football player son KJ, played by Nathaniel McIntyre. KJ’s family has been in Los Angeles for two weeks so that he can go to a football camp. KJ doesn’t know it yet, but his life is about to take a big turn.
Cassius and Ava tell KJ a big secret: they’ve decided to try a separation. Ava will stay in Oakland, while Cassius and KJ will stay in Los Angeles. KJ will move up to Beverly High School. KJ is very angry because he thinks his parents have made a big choice without asking him. You can feel the tension between KJ and his parents, and it’s clear that this family is having a hard time.
But after a few conversations, including one with Amina, a South Crenshaw student who becomes an important part of KJ’s story, his view starts to change. KJ accepts his new life by the end of the episode and tells his parents that they will always be a family, even though they live far away. Cassius proudly tells KJ, “This is our new home,” as he takes her to the Beverly High gym. Hi, and welcome to Beverly High. It’s a time of acceptance and hope, but KJ’s journey is just getting started.
ALL AMERICAN SEASON 7 EPISODE 2 “GET BY” RECAP
Friendship between Amina and Khalil
When we talk about Amina, she is one of the returning characters who has been made a series regular this season. Amina goes to South Crenshaw and is the daughter of Preach, a character that fans loved in earlier seasons. She is smart, wants to do well, and clearly has a thing for her longtime friend Khalil, who is also a South Crenshaw student and has been made a series regular.
But Khalil is having a hard time right now. He has been hanging out with some bad people, and it’s hurting his grades so much that he has to repeat his junior year. During a day at the beach, Amina tries to talk to him, but Khalil brushes her off, which makes things tense. To get back at Khalil, Amina kisses KJ, who she doesn’t even know, on the spur of the moment. This leads to a fight between KJ and Khalil, which gets worse when one of Khalil’s friends pulls a gun on KJ.
Luckily, no one gets hurt, and Khalil even tells his friend off for getting violent. But the event stays with you and makes you think about the problems Khalil is having navigating his troubled environment. Khalil later says sorry to Amina, but their relationship is still not easy. There’s no doubt that Amina likes him, but there’s also a strong attraction between her and KJ. This could lead to a love triangle as the season goes on.
OGs: Jordan, Layla, and Coop
The episode has a lot of new characters, but it doesn’t forget about the old cast members who are still doing their jobs. Layla, played by Greta Onieogou, has done so well in her career that she was named one of the Top 25 Under 25. When you’re successful, though, you have to deal with problems, and Layla starts to wonder if she’s reached her peak yet. Anyone who has ever thought, “What’s next?” can relate to this moment.
Bre-Z’s character, Coop, is getting ready to start law school at GAU. This seems like the next logical step for her. After everything she’s been through, Coop is ready to turn her desire for justice into a job as a lawyer. Her journey looks like it will be one of the most interesting stories of the season.
Then there’s Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), who is getting used to his new job as South Crenshaw’s quarterback coach. Jordan has always been a good leader, but it’s hard for him to be a friend to his players and a coach at the same time. This becomes clear when they have an awkward conversation with South Crenshaw’s starting quarterback—Yasi (Elijah M. Cooper). Jordan is blurring the lines between being a coach and a friend so Yasi tells him to change how he acts.
As a result, Jordan makes his personal Instagram account private and makes a separate account for his coaching job. Setting limits is being done in a small but important way. But South Crenshaw’s head coach, Coach Bobby, is still not sure. He’s been extra tough on Jordan, and when another coach asks him why, Bobby says, “Well, I’ve got my reasons.” There seems to be more to Coach Bobby’s behavior than meets the eye because of this lingering tension.
A nod to Spencer James
For fans who miss Daniel Ezra’s Spencer James, the episode is a touching tribute to the character. Spencer calls Jordan and tries to cheer him up, telling him that he can motivate the next generation of South Crenshaw football players.
