Must Read: Candy Review: Is It Worth Watching?
Candy Episode 1 ‘Friday the 13th’ Recap
The episode begins on a lazy Friday morning in Wylie, Texas. Allan Gore gets ready and tells Betty he has to work that weekend. Betty is worried about her husband leaving with a crying baby at home. She complains of aches and pains, but Allan reassures her before leaving for St. Paul, Minnesota.
Candy and Pat Montgomery, friends of Betty and Allan, host Christina for a sleepover. Candy decides she can stay another night since Betty will be busy with the baby and asks if she can pick up Christina’s swimsuit. Candy’s cheerfulness irritates Betty, but she invites her to come at 11 a.m. Candy has a busy day and plans to visit Betty before going shopping.
Candy arrives after Allan has left, leaving Betty alone with the baby. Candy and Betty don’t interact, but Candy later leaves the house, visibly shaken and covered in blood. Candy rushes home and washes her bloodstained clothes. Her foot and head are also hurt.
How Did Betty Die in ‘Candy’ Episode 1?
Candy picks up her kids and tries to have a normal day. She and Pat take the kids to a movie and get tacos. Candy acts oddly throughout and describes her day to a surprised Pat. She says she met Betty to get Christina’s swimsuit, and then her watch broke.
A work trip leaves Allan unable to reach Betty. The husband worries when she doesn’t answer his third call. He asks Richard Parker, their neighbour, to check on the house and Betty. Richard and two other neighbours eventually reach the Gore home. They find Betty dead inside and tell Allan she’s been shot. The episode ends with Allan calling Candy to break the bad news, and a bloodstained axe next to Betty’s body.
So Betty may not have been shot at all. When told his wife has been shot, Allan says they don’t even own a gun. Richard, Jerry, and Lester are shocked to find Betty’s body in the utility closet. So they don’t enter the room and only see the body from afar, possibly mistaking the cause of death for a shooting.
The axe appears to have killed Betty in the final scene, explaining the blood spatter around her. If Candy did murder Betty, her dishevelled appearance when she leaves Betty’s house would explain this. Finally, a gunshot in a quiet neighbourhood would have been heard. Since no one in the neighbourhood heard gunshots, it’s likely Betty was axed to death.
Candy Episode 1 Ending Explained: Is Candy to Blame?
Candy is clearly Betty’s killer. She is clearly a victim of violence, as evidenced by her appearance when she leaves the Gores’ house. Her behaviour for the rest of the day says a lot. Candy keeps repeating her plans for the day to everyone she meets, as if she needs multiple alibis. The young mother is also agitated and vomits at one point.
Candy has clearly murdered Betty and is now fearful of the repercussions if her crime is discovered. She seems to be comforted when Allan tells her Betty was shot. Candy probably didn’t use a gun to kill Betty, and she believes that if she did, she wouldn’t be charged with the crime.
Of course, the question of why Candy killed Betty remains unanswered. But it’s clear they had a fight. Betty, who has been frustrated since Allan left for his work trip, may have triggered the apparent physical altercation.
