    Cathy Krauseneck Murder

The shocking 1982 murder of 29-year-old Cathy Krauseneck in Brighton, New York, has remained one of the most discussed cold cases in the United States. The case is known as the “Brighton Axe Murder” and has been covered by CBS’s 48 Hours: The Brighton Axe Murder and NBC’s Dateline: The Bad Man. These true-crime shows look at investigations that have been going on for decades, showing new forensic evidence, police theories and emotional interviews with family members. Many people who first heard about the case through these shows went to sites like Spiky TV to read detailed timelines and updates.

    Cathy Krauseneck

    Who Was Cathy Krauseneck?

Cathy Krauseneck was a vibrant 29-year-old woman whose life was cut short in her Brighton home. Cathleen Rose Schlosser was born on April 14, 1952, in Mount Clemens, Michigan. She grew up in a warm, busy home with five other children. Robert and Anna Schlosser, her parents, raised their kids with love, which made their family very close. Many people liked Cathy because she was friendly and had a good heart. Her love of life was contagious, and she brightened up any room she walked into.

In high school, Cathy met James Krauseneck, a local from Mount Clemens. Their romance blossomed, and they continued dating while attending Western Michigan University. They got married on May 3, 1974 and started a life together. Cathy worked as an orthopaedic therapist after moving to Fort Collins, Colorado. James went to Colorado State University to earn a degree in economics. They were thrilled to welcome their daughter Sara into the world in April 1978.

The Krausenecks later relocated to Lynchburg, Virginia, where James taught economics at Lynchburg College from 1979 to 1981. In September 1981, they settled in Brighton, New York, a quiet suburb of Rochester. James took a job as an economist at Eastman Kodak, and Cathy embraced her role as a devoted mother to 3-year-old Sara. The duo enjoyed simple pleasures like sledding and planned to attend the circus together. But tragedy struck before they could make those memories.

The Horrific Murder of Cathy Krauseneck

The Brighton Police got a scary call from a neighbour on February 19, 1982. James Krauseneck showed up at their door with Sara in his arms, saying there might have been a murder. When officers entered the Krauseneck home on Del Rio Drive, they found Cathy dead in her bed, an axe lodged in her skull. The single blow had killed her instantly, leaving a gruesome scene.

It looked like someone had broken into the house. Cathy’s purse and a silver tea set were all over the dining room floor. Someone found a trash bag with a faint shoe print on it and a broken windowpane on the garage door. The pieces of glass were neatly stacked nearby. But nothing of value was missing, and the axe that was used to kill the man belonged to the Krauseneck family. Because of these clues, the police thought the burglary was staged to hide the crime.

The autopsy revealed no signs of sexual assault, confirming the cause of death as the axe wound. It estimated Cathy’s time of death between 4:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., a critical window that overlapped with when James said he left for work. Sara, unharmed, was found in the house. When questioned, the 3-year-old described seeing a “bad man” with “many colors” on his face. The investigators thought she was probably remembering the bloody body of her mother, which would have been very sad for a young child.

The Investigation Begins: James Becomes a Suspect

James told the police that he left for work at 6:30 a.m. and came home in the evening to find the garage door open and Cathy dead. They called 911 from a neighbour’s house after he took Sara there. At first, James was helpful and gave statements and samples. But he hired a lawyer and moved to Michigan with Sara without telling the police within 24 hours, which made people suspicious.

Investigators focused on James as a suspect. The fake crime scene, the absence of foreign fingerprints or DNA (DNA technology wasn’t available in 1982), and the time of death window all suggested that the person who did it knew the house. Detectives also found out that James had lied to Kodak about having a Ph.D., which he never finished. They thought that Cathy might have found out about the lie, which could have led to a deadly fight. A marriage counselling pamphlet found in their car suggested that their marriage might be in trouble, but friends said the couple was happy.

Despite the suspicions, the case could not progress due to a lack of sufficient direct evidence. For years, Cathy’s murder went unsolved, leaving her family, including her father, Bob Schlosser, to deal with their grief and unanswered questions.

    Edward Laraby

    A Cold Case Heats Up

The case went cold, but Cathy’s family and friends never stopped looking for justice. A new lead came up in 2012 when Edward Laraby, a convicted criminal who lived near the Krausenecks in 1982, admitted to the murder. Laraby had a history of robbery, attempted murder, and rape. However, his confession included inaccuracies, such as describing the victim as having dark hair and being thin, unlike Cathy. Investigators ruled him out, and Laraby died in prison in 2014.

In 2015, Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley reopened the case with FBI support. Detectives Mark Liberatore and Steve Hunt re-examined evidence, and forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden provided a narrower time-of-death estimate: 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. This placed James at home during the murder. However, the defence’s expert, Dr. Katherine Maloney, argued this window was unreliable, suggesting the time of death could extend to early afternoon. No new DNA evidence emerged, as only household member profiles were found.

    • 1982–2011: Case remains unsolved; James is considered a suspect but not charged.

    • 2012: Convict Edward Laraby falsely confesses.

    • 2016: Investigators confront James at his Washington home.

    • Nov 2019: James indicted for second-degree murder.

    • Sept 2022: Trial begins; jury finds James guilty.

    • Nov 2022: Sentenced to 25 years to life.

    • May 2023: James dies in prison while appealing his conviction.

In November 2019, a Monroe County grand jury indicted him for second-degree murder based on circumstantial evidence. James surrendered voluntarily and pleaded not guilty.

    James Krauseneck’s Arrest and Trial

In 2016, detectives visited James and his fourth wife, Sharon, in Gig Harbor, Washington, confronting him about the murder. James denied involvement. On November 1, 2019, based on circumstantial evidence like the staged crime scene and revised time of death, James was indicted for second-degree murder. He surrendered to authorities a week later and pleaded not guilty.

The trial started in Rochester on September 6, 2022. Prosecutors said that the burglary was fake, and Baden’s estimate of the time of death pointed to James. The defence said there wasn’t enough direct evidence, the forensic window wasn’t reliable, and Laraby’s confession. The jury found James guilty of second-degree murder on September 26, 2022, after 10 hours of discussion. He was given a sentence of 25 years to life on November 7.

Sara, who is now in her 40s and goes by the name Sara Ann Young, stood by her father, went to hearings and said she believed he was innocent. She talked about how sad she was that she lost both of her parents in a victim impact statement. Her mother was killed and her father went to jail.

    The Aftermath and Lingering Questions

James Krauseneck died in prison from esophageal cancer on May 5, 2023, six months after he was sentenced. Because he died before an appeal could be heard, his conviction was thrown out under New York law. This is known as “abatement ab initio.” Sharon Krauseneck, married to James since 1999, continued to defend his innocence, stating in June 2023 that she believed the conviction was unjust. She and Sara pursued an appeal to clear his name posthumously.

Cathy’s father, Bob Schlosser, spoke on 48 Hours about the profound loss and his long-held suspicions about James, which he felt were confirmed by the conviction. Both 48 Hours and Dateline highlighted the emotional toll on Sara, who was just a toddler when she lost her mother and now navigates the pain of her father’s conviction.
