‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ Episode 1 Recap

The show’s first episode focuses on how faith is crucial in Mormon families and how tough it is for them to ingest something negative about the church or their religion. Officer Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) is seen playing with his daughter and living a happy life at the opening of the episode. He is a devout Mormon who attends church with his entire family. He receives a call from the station, informing him that he has been assigned to investigate a case.

He finds it difficult to understand how someone could do something so awful, especially to a 15-month-old infant, as soon as he arrives at the murder scene. When he’s done, he and his crew see a man covered in blood just outside the house, and it turns out that man is Brenda’s husband, Allen (Billy Howle).

Everything starts to come out at this point. How Allen, like his family, is a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brenda (Daisey Edgar Jones), on the other hand, was disliked by his father because he was free-spirited, and despite the fact that she attended church, Brenda was more interested in enjoying life. Because Allen doesn’t know where the other members of the family are and continues to claim he hasn’t seen them, police believe he is the lone suspect.

We also learn how religion can be utilised during the process. There was a lot going on in the Lafferty household. They were regarded as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ most powerful family. We see how unlike that family was, and it becomes even more dramatic as Allen tries to convince Jeb that faith isn’t always correct.

This is where the show takes a turn for the better. Because he believes in his god and believes that nothing bad can emanate from the temple of God, Garfield’s character finds it difficult to believe what Allen is saying.

One line in the programme rocked me to my core. “Faith begets dangerous guys,” Allen says when interrogating, and whether you like it or not, this is somewhat true. The first episode is about a man’s struggle between what he knows and what he doesn’t know.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been established for about 200 years, and it has always been shrouded in mystery. The episode attempts to unravel the mystery against the backdrop of the heinous killings that occurred in 1984.

Andrew Garfield is wonderful as Jeb Pyre, and he accomplishes something magical in each and every frame. He’s just too talented. Meanwhile, Gil Birmingham’s performance as Detective Bill Taba is outstanding. The rivalry between Garfield and Birmingham is fascinating to observe.

Despite the fact that many people already know who did it, we still want Pyre and Taba to find out who killed those innocent people. A fantastic start to an engrossing series that will have you questioning your own religion.

Every Thursday at 12:01 a.m. EST, ‘Under the Banner of Heaven‘ returns to FX on Hulu with a new episode.
