Is Broad Peak a True Story

Is Netflix’s Broad Peak Based on a True Story?

Yes, “Broad Peak” is, in fact, based on a true story. The life of Polish mountaineer and mountain guide Maciej Berbeka is portrayed in the film. The movie’s script was written by Lukasz Ludkowski and was influenced by Berbeka’s travels and his experiences on Broad Peak. At 8,051 meters (26,414 feet) above sea level, it is the twelfth-highest peak in the world and is situated in the Karakoram on the boundary between Pakistan and China.

On October 17, 1954, Berbeka was born in Zakopane, Poland. Although nothing is known about his early years, by the 1980s, he had made a name for himself as one of the top mountain climbers in the nation. Berbeka belonged to Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue and the Union Internationale des Associations de Guides de Montagnes (UIAGM) (TOPR). Additionally, he belonged to the Polish club of accomplished mountaineers known as the “Ice Warriors,” which was noted for its winter ascents.

Successful trips to Manaslu (in the Nepalese Himalayas), Cho Oyu (also in the Himalayas), Annapurna (in the Gandaki Province of Nepal), and Mount Everest are among Berbeka’s exploits (in the Himalayas). The mountaineer attempted to climb Broad Peak in March 1988, but after spending more than two days on the peak, he turned back and missed the summit by over 17 meters. In 2013, nearly 25 years later, he decided to retry the climb. Adam Bielecki, Tomasz Kowalski, and Artur Maek accompany Berbeka.

Although the group reached the mountain’s summit on March 6, 2013, Berbeka and Kowalski were reported missing while the group was on the way down after they could not get to Camp 4. After the pair failed to reach the climbers, the base camp dispatched a rescue squad. After more than two days passed without hearing from the climbers, Krzysztof Wielicki, the expedition leader of the Polish Mountaineering Association’s winter expedition, declared that Berbeka and Kowalski had passed away.

Berbeka’s life is depicted in the Netflix movie from his initial ascent of Broad Peak until his eventual demise. Producer Maciej Rzczyski described how the movie was conceptualized based on the story of the legendary mountain climber in an interview with Screen Daily. He explained that he read the book “A Long Film About Love: Return To Broad Peak” by author Jacek Hugo-Bader before having the idea. It describes the circumstances leading up to Berbeka’s passing away atop Broad Peak, which was released in 2014.

According to Rzczyski,There was a big social conversation in Poland at the time about what happened there, and everyone seemed to have an opinion about what the mountaineers had been doing.”

The producer of the movie said, “I felt that the passion to want to climb up to the summit of these mountains was so strong that we should make a feature film about it and realized that this would be the first Polish feature about mountaineering because there hadn’t been any before.”

As a result, the production started once Berbeka’s family gave their approval and the studio contacted them.

According to Rzczyski, the motivation behind the biographical film was to depict actual events and emphasize the essence of mountaineering. As a result, the audience may identify with Berbeka’s adventure and his love of mountain climbing. A dramatic account of the Polish climber’s life and his gruesome death at the end of his expedition is presented in the film, which largely follows the facts. All things considered, “Broad Peak” is a dramatized account of an incredible but little-known true story about Berbeka’s tenacity and will.
