Is Mercedes Based on a Real-Life Stripper?

Mercedes (Brandee Evans) is NOT based on a specific real-life stripper. Creator Katori Hall created the character for the show’s source play, ‘Pussy Valley.’ Although Mercedes is a fictional character not based on any actual stripper, Hall was affected by the experiences of various women in creating not only the original play but also additional characters.

“Across the course of six years, I went to clubs in [Washington] D.C., Atlanta, Memphis, L.A., and all over the country and interviewed around 40 ladies,” the creator told the Los Angeles Times. As a result, Mercedes is not aloof from reality.

Mercedes truly represents the life of a dancer, complete with ambitions, fears, and emotional weaknesses, proving that strippers are more than simply physical beings. “This [P-Valley] is a humanization effort for me.” This is to make people leave and enter P-Valley, and ultimately think, ‘Oh my my, this woman that I dehumanised or I just didn’t see all of her humanity, she is a person that hurts and dreams,'” Hall told Essence.

Mercedes is undoubtedly the most important component of the creator’s “humanization effort,” as the show chronicles her trials and tribulations in great detail. Hall sought to reflect the world of sex workers, strippers, and other women working at strip clubs with “empathy” and “heart” when he wrote the play and then the show.

Mercedes is a compassionate depiction of the life of a stripper. The play portrays her as a strong, dignified, and admirable lady and artist, defying the stereotypes and prejudices that exist in the actual world about strippers. “I want people to see themselves in Uncle Clifford, Mercedes, Autumn Night, and Miss Mississippi,” Hall told Essence.

Despite the fact that Mercedes is a fictional character, there are striking parallels between her and Brandee Evans, who plays her in ‘P-Valley.’ “When I first read the P-Valley script, I thought to myself, ‘This woman’s a PK—a preacher’s kid?’ I work as a PK. Is she a dance coach? I am a dance coach that has won competitions all around the world. I’m a competitive person. Is it true that she has a sour relationship with her mother? Oh, my goodness. Evans told Elle, “Toxic was the important term in my connection with my mother growing up.” Even though the similarities are coincidental, they give Evans’ portrayal of the character a sense of realism.
