‘Ray Donovan: The Movie‘ starts up where the acclaimed Showtime crime drama series of the same name left off, following the titular fixer (Liev Schreiber) on a highly personal assignment that could be his final.
While Ray is dealing with his father’s relentless pursuit for a quick buck, the movie shows us a critical moment between father and son through flashbacks.

The film, co-written and directed by David Hollander (who also serves as the showrunner for the series), has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the programme and has been hailed as a suitable sendoff for Ray Donovan.
Is this the end of the story for our moody titular hero? Is it possible that a sequel to ‘Ray Donovan: The Movie‘ will be released, as well as a season 8 of ‘Ray Donovan‘?
Here’s what we know about the Donovan family’s future plans.

Release Date for Ray Donovan: The Movie
‘Ray Donovan: The Movie’ debuted on Showtime on January 14, 2022. The film was also shown on a variety of television streaming sites, and it is scheduled to be available on several on-demand platforms in the future.
In terms of a sequel, we don’t recommend holding your breath for it to be released. Since the Showtime series ‘Ray Donovan‘ was unceremoniously cancelled after its seventh season, viewers (and the show’s creators) have been left without a proper conclusion to the Donovan family’s long-running storey arc.
The film ultimately aims to wrap up many of the arcs that have engrossed viewers of the show for numerous seasons.
Ray’s past is also told in the film, which includes one of the most critical events in our hero’s connection with his father.
According to David Hollander, the film will help tie up several of the show’s plotlines, including those left unresolved in the season 7 finale.
In terms of future movie sequels or even a potential season 8, the showrunner hasn’t ruled out the notion, noting that ‘Ray Donovan’s broad world and layered characters could still have a narrative to tell.
He did, however, clarify that developing a second season (or sequel) will necessitate a number of different variables coming together.
Of course, some narrative lines from the (cancelled) season 8 have been included in the film, which takes up where season 7 left off.
As a result, a ‘Ray Donovan: The Movie’ sequel or a ‘Ray Donovan’ season 8 are quite improbable in the near future.
As you can see, lead actor and co-writer Liev Schreiber’s behind-the-scenes posts also imply that the cast members are saying their goodbyes after working together on numerous seasons and a feature.
It’s also fitting that ‘Ray Donovan’ ends in Boston, because that’s where the storey of the brooding, gritty hero begins.
