Who Is Jed Johnson’s Ex-boyfriend ‘Alan Wanzenberg’?
Alan Wanzenberg was the third son of Doris and Henry Wanzenberg and was born in Evanston, Illinois.
He earned with a Bachelor’s Degree in Building from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973, after developing a passion for design and architecture since childhood.
In 1978, he graduated from Harvard with a Master’s in Architecture and moved to New York City to work for renowned architect I.M. Pei. It is here that he met rising interior designer Jed Johnson.
Alan and Jed founded Johnson and Wanzerberg in 1982 and partnered to design and build the homes of celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Richard Gere, Sandy Brant, and Jerry Hall.
Alan thought Jed was quiet at first, and they both thought of each other as hardworking and humble. When Warhol and Jed parted up in 1985 after twelve years of companionship, the latter found solace and affection in Alan.
They began dating soon after and moved into an apartment on West 67th Street in New York City.
In the 1980s, Jed and Alan established themselves as one of the most recognised and game-changing architectural and design firms.
They were well-known for their sophisticated fusion of contemporary designs and unique home decor. To allow the partners to operate in their own domains, the Johnson and Wanzenberg firm was divided in 1987 into Alan Wanzenberg Architect P.C. and Jed Johnson Associates.
They also had two houses on Fire Island, off the southern shore of Long Island, New York, and lived a calm and loving life with their dog, Gus.
However, Alan was devastated when Jed, 47, died tragically in the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996.
Alan was consoled by old friends of the couple like Pat Hackett, Bob Colacello, and Jed’s brother Jay after his body was pulled safely from the river a few days later. Alan and Jed sold their West 67th Street apartment in September 2012.

What Happened To Alan Wanzenberg And Where Is He Now?
Alan Wanzenberg, according to our sources, is currently residing in Ancram, New York. It took him six years to recover from the shock of Jed’s death.
“When Jed died, it was awful and chaotic and frightening, and there was also just a lot of stuff,” he recalled in an interview during that difficult period.
Things I kept out of respect for him, and there were a lot of them. I did it with a certain amount of vigour and didn’t give up, but it was a lot.”
During the Gay Ski Week in Aspen, Colorado, in 2003, he met landscape architect Peter Kelly. Soon after, they fell in love and resided at the 67th West Street apartment until Alan sold it in 2012.
Peter and Alan also shared ownership of a Costa Rican bungalow and a country estate in Upstate New York. Alan also lived on West 60th Street in a two-bedroom apartment.
He runs Alan Wanzenberg architect and Taghkanic Studios, which has been acknowledged for design quality by the New York Times and is routinely featured in Architectural Digest’s Top 100 Designers and Architects.
The majority of his work, even today, is a tribute to Jed’s ideas and approaches. Alan also wrote a book named ‘Journey: The Life and Times of an American Architect‘ in 2013, which recounts his work, inspirations, and equation with Jed.
Aside from employment, Alan is involved in a number of initiatives that help aspiring visual artists and graduate students. It’s unclear whether he and Peter are still working together.
The architect speaks on how he still loves and misses Jed in the documentary series ‘The Andy Warhol Diaries,’ and how his admiration for the guy has pushed him to carry on with his life and create incredible things.
