When David Kinney, a close friend of Brad McGarry’s, came to visit in May 2017, he uncovered a disturbing find in the basement.
Brad’s home in Bellaire, Ohio, was the scene of a homicide when he was discovered shot to death there.
‘The Murder Tapes: Scene of the Crime,’ a documentary on Investigation Discovery, examines how the police learned that David knew more than he told them when he presented numerous tales about what transpired on the day of the murder.

What Caused Brad McGarry’s Death?
Brad Dennis McGarry was born in Cambridge, Ohio, in October 1973. The 43-year-old worked as a coal miner in Bellaire and lived alone.
Brad also worked as a hairdresser and held a cosmetology degree. Brad left after a family supper in Monroe County, Ohio, on May 7, 2017, to return home and meet someone.
David dropped by with his wife and daughter on the same day to drop off a weed trimmer, only to discover Brad’s dead in the basement.
Around 6:15 p.m., David’s wife dialled 911, and authorities discovered Brad face down in a pool of blood. He was shot twice in the back of the head with a.22-caliber weapon.
With drawers open and items thrown about, the house appeared to be in turmoil. When various valuable items in the residence were still present, the first theory of a robbery gone awry was ruled out.
The murder weapon was never discovered, and no shot casings were found at the location.
Who Was Responsible For The Death of Brad McGarry?
During the investigation, authorities met with one of Brad’s cousins, Schuyler Strawser.
During the afternoon of March 7, 2017, the cousin said he was with Brad before he left to see someone named DJ.
DJ was a married man with whom Brad had been having an affair, according to Schuyler. DJ was later identified as David Kinney by the police.
He’d been having an extramarital affair with Brad for years, and by the end of 2016, his wife had her doubts about their relationship.
Surveillance footage from Brad’s street captured David’s car going toward Brad’s house at 1:59 p.m. on May 7 and leaving at 3:11 p.m.
Brad arrived home at 2:55 p.m., as previously said. On the day of the murder, David was in the neighbourhood of the crime scene.
He was then brought in to be interrogated. He admitted to the affair during the interview.
Witnesses said Brad threatened to notify David’s wife about their connection if he didn’t leave his marriage.
When probed about the events of May 7, David told numerous different tales about what had happened.
He claimed to be at Brad’s place at first, although Brad was not there at the time. Then David altered his narrative to include Brad having an affair with an unidentified man.
David claimed that an unidentified man shot Brad and that he didn’t report the incident to the police because he was afraid.
However, when probed further, David gave a different version of the story. This time, he claimed that Brad drew a gun on him during an incident between them.
After a scuffle, David snatched the weapon from Brad and shot him in self-defense.
What Happened to David Kinney?
When Brad was on the ground, David claimed he reshot him. He then claimed to have driven away from the scene with the gun in his hand.
The autopsy report, on the other hand, contradicted his account of events. David was found guilty of aggravated murder with a gun specification in February 2018.
He was condemned to life in jail without the chance of release when he was 31 years old.
David is still detained at the Belmont Correctional Institution in St Clairsville, Ohio, according to prison records.
