American television producer Joel Michael “Mike” Mendel passed away on September 22, 2019, at age 54. His work on The Simpsons and Rick & Morty earned him five Emmy Awards.

Mendel went to Central Valley High School in Monroe-Woodbury, New York. He lived in Studio City, Los Angeles, and had two kids with Juel Bestrop, who oversaw casting for the shows Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Life in Pieces.

During his Syracuse University summer break from his studies, Mendel began his career in television as a production assistant on All My Children and Loving.

He worked with James L. Brooks, and Gracie Films on the television shows like Broadcast News, Big, and The Tracey Ullman Show after earning a Bachelor of Science in television and film production from Syracuse. Mendel joined the cast as the program’s producer after Tracey Ullman’s Simpsons shorts were turned into their own series, serving from season 1 through season 10. Mendel received three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program for his work on The Simpsons in 1995 (“Lisa’s Wedding”), 1997 (“Homer’s Phobia”), and 1998. (“Trash of the Titans”).
