So, after a quick review of the events that led up to it, let’s get to it, shall we?
Recap of Sanditon Season 2 Episode 5
The Parkers are in a pickle when the merchants refuse to furnish supplies for their upcoming ball due to the battalion’s outstanding bills, as the episode opens. Tom eventually admits to Arthur and Mary that Colonel Lennox has enslaved him in a gambling debt, disappointing them. Alison, who is crushed, decides to return home, but Charlotte tells her not to give up on love.
Meanwhile, Georgiana meets Charles, and the two fall in love, much to Mary’s chagrin. Edward replaces Esther’s medicine with poison, which does not kill her but causes her to have hysterical episodes and lose her sanity. When Charlotte arrives at work, she discovers Augusta distressed about not being able to attend the ball, and she tries to persuade Alexander to let her go.
He has trouble apologising to her for his previous outburst at Lady Denham’s party at first, but they finally reconcile. Meanwhile, Captain Fraser contacts Alison and attempts to make apologies for Captain Carter’s actions. They begin to bond as she finds he is not as harsh as he appears. Colonel Lennox and his men had previously duped people in other towns, which makes Lady Denham concerned.
Fortunately, Arthur’s benevolence persuades the shopkeepers, and the ball is organised at the last minute. Georgiana and Alison try to persuade Charlotte to give Colonel Lennox a chance before the ball since they believe he is more suited than Alexander. Alison later confronts Captain Carter at the ball and responds appropriately before dancing with Captain Lennox.
Unfortunately, Esther’s failing health forces her to make an inadvertent scene at the ball, upsetting Lady Denham. Edward then persuades his aunt that Esther’s family has a history of mental illness and that she may be on the verge of succumbing to the same fate.
This, combined with the lack of communication from Lord Babington, causes Lady Denham to mistrust Esther’s claim to be her heir. Despite Clara’s efforts to persuade him otherwise, Edward refuses to budge and vows vengeance on his step-sister, who begins to lose faith. In addition, Charles informs Georgiana that he is departing for Europe the next day and invites her to elope with him, putting her in a difficult situation.
Who will Charlotte Select, Colonel Lennox or Alexander at the End of Season 2 Episode 5 of Sanditon?
Colonel Lennox intends to win Charlotte over at all costs after learning that Alexander likes her as well at the garden party. After their dance at the ball, he tries to speak with her, but she ignores him and walks away. When Alexander and Augusta arrive unexpectedly, Charlotte is delighted and persuades him to dance. Colonel Lennox becomes angry when he notices their proximity and decides to take a different strategy.
After that, Charlotte tries to convey to Alison and Georgiana that she prefers Alexander when Colonel Lennox appears and requests a private meeting with her. He then expresses his affections for her and proposes marriage to her, but she declines, stating that she does not want to marry anyone.
She also claims that she does not love him in return, but he refuses to budge and insists that she agree. Colonel Lennox tries to kiss Charlotte forcibly despite her rejection, and then threatens her with his status. Alexander, thankfully, comes on the scene and guides a visibly shaken Charlotte away. She then begs him to tell her the truth about his past, revealing everything Colonel Lennox had stated about him previously.
Alexander, overcome by his affections for her, brings her home and tells her about his traumatic past. Charlotte soothes him, moved by his anguish, and the two kiss gently, expressing their hidden love for each other.
Lucy Colbourne: What Happened to Her?
When Charlotte informs Alexander of Colonel Lennox’s depiction of Lucy, he is enraged and tells her the truth about his late wife. Lucy and Alexander married at a young age, and she planned to remain in London’s elite after that. He left her there for the social season and returned to Sanditon because he was very reclusive. Due to the distance, the couple became estranged, but Alexander soon learned that his wife was in danger and rushed to meet her.
Lucy told Alexander about her adulterous romance with Captain Lennox (later Colonel), whom she met after her husband had departed. Her partner, who had gone away for another posting, abandoned her after she became pregnant as a result of the affair. Despite his betrayal by his wife, Alexander accepted her and the child.
Lucy’s shame overwhelmed her after she gave birth to a baby girl called Leonora, and she died tragically as a result. Charlotte consoles a grieving Alexander and praises his chivalry after learning that Leonora is Colonel Lennox’s daughter and how heartless he is. Unfortunately, the small girl overhears the talk and flees in terror.
