The fifth episode of ‘Slow Horses,’ titled ‘Fiasco,’ finds Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) in top form and commanding his Slow Horses from Slough House. River Cartwright has finally brought something useful to the table, and his grizzled boss wastes no time in storming the lion’s den and facing Diana Taverner, the chief of MI5.
Meanwhile, following Curly’s sudden and vicious attack on Moe, the kidnappers continue their getaway. Things are as frantic as ever, but the Slough House agents’ luck may be changing. Let’s take a deeper look at episode 5 of ‘Slow Horses.’
Slow Horses Episode 5 ‘Fiasco’ Recap
The episode begins with the remainder of the Slow Horses reuniting with Jackson and Catherine, and River recalling when he last saw Alan Black. He tells the group that he has a photograph showing Alan and Diana Taverner meeting in secret, implying that the MI5 chief is to blame for the current problem.
When Jackson learns of this, he reluctantly orders River to join him and warns the rest of his squad to stay away from the “dogs,” as MI5 agents are popularly known. Meanwhile, Hassan remains imprisoned in the back of the car as the kidnappers continue their frenzied, blood-splattered escape.
Curly persists in his plan to kill the captive, but the tables are turned when Zeppo pulls out a revolver and takes command of the situation. They then intend to travel to their boat and flee the nation, but they must stop for gasoline. Hassan is forced to step out to fill his prisoners’ car, which leads to a stressful interval. Despite his best intentions, he does not flee and returns to the automobile.
Meanwhile, Jackson smuggles Rives into MI5 headquarters, where he meets Diana for the first time. She tries to coerce Jackson into signing a false confession, promising him that he would not be charged but would be fired, believing she has the upper hand. River, on the other hand, discovers the incriminating photos in a folder labelled “Fiasco” (thus the episode’s title) and confronts Diana just in time.
Why Does Curly Kill Zeppo in Slow Horses Episode 5?
When Diana is confronted with evidence of her ties to Alan Black, she finds herself in a difficult situation. Jackson then tells her to concentrate on saving Hassan and to stop accusing the Slow Horses. All of the cars suspected in the kidnapping have vanished, according to the MI5 boss, and Hassan’s fate is still up in the air.
The thieves, impressed by Hassan’s willingness to assist them to refuel and not fleeing, lighten the mood back in the kidnappers’ car. They ask their young hostage to recite some of his stand-up comedy routine’s gags, which he does. The kidnappers become more frantic as the jokes become more insulting, until Curly takes up the unattended gun and kills Zeppo. After then, the episode ends with an unsettling silence in the automobile.
As a result, another Apple TV+ ‘Slow Horses’ episode ends with a brutal murder, this time perpetrated by Curly. The kidnapper, who is the youngest and has the least experience, appears to be the most bloodthirsty. Curly also realises that if he is caught after killing Alan Black, who is actually an MI5 agent, he is doomed. When asked about killing Hassan, he previously stated that since he has already done a horrific crime, committing another murder would make little difference. Curly, in essence, has nothing to lose.
Curly is, however, the only one who is fully committed to the kidnappers’ frightening threat to kill Hassan. Curly is intent about killing Hassan, despite his two other partners pleading with him to let him go and flee the country. As a result, Zeppo underestimates Curly when he tries to gain control by intimidating him with a gun.
Curly, despite pretending to be persuaded by Zeppo’s scheme, never intends to change his mind and instead waits for the chance to reclaim control of the gang. Curly takes advantage of the distraction provided by Hassan’s jokes and murders Zeppo, demonstrating unequivocally who is in command.
What Do River’s Diana Taverner Photographs Prove?
River’s photo of Diana, taken during his training, turns out to be far more damaging than the young spy could have imagined. River is sent to Slough House after he overhears Diana conversing with Alan Black. The photo essentially demonstrates that Alan was complicit in Hassan’s kidnapping on Diana’s orders, implicating the MI5 chief in a major felony.
Diana, of course, has her own motivations for assisting in the kidnapping. She recognises, however, that her involvement in the crime will never be disclosed. Diana is in a pickle now that Jackson and River have the photos, and she will almost certainly have to do as they say or risk losing her job and potentially facing legal repercussions.
