Debora Kelly was born in Topeka, Kansas, to Jim and Lucille “Anne” Kelly in June 1967. David, the couple’s son, was born to them. Jim and Anne moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, in 1997, where Jim worked as a self-employed construction and repair worker.
However, Jim and Anne were devastated to learn of their daughter’s death in October 2015. Lars was singled out by the authorities due to his contradictory comments.
“Lars and I had a moment or two where we kind of had hot chats,” Jim said at Lars’ trial in December 2016. ‘Lars, I’m doing everything I can to stay friends with you, to believe this was an accident, and to make good with this,’ I told him at one point. However, I have bad days and days when I just can’t buy it. And on those days, I probably feel like murdering you.’
Jim was also in charge of his daughter’s fortune, and he claimed she had no will or prenuptial agreement. Debora had always planned to retire early, he said. She was planning a trip with her mother at the time of the tragedy. While Debora kept her personal facts confidential, Anne testified that she had never had any complaints about Lars.
Debora Kelly’s mother, Anne Kelly, told the Jury and Lars:
“I just don’t know why someone would not take three seconds to reach over and make sure your wife was next to you. It doesn’t make any sense to me, Lars.”

Lars was eventually convicted guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to a hefty prison term. “I just don’t understand why someone would not take three seconds to reach over and make sure your wife was next to you,” Debora said in court. Lars, it doesn’t make logic to me.”
Jim was disappointed in the manslaughter verdict and wished he had spent more time with his daughter. Jim died on June 23, 2020, at the age of 76. He was married to Nancy Jones at the time of his death. Before relocating to Bella Vista, the devoted father and grandpa worked for the railroad and served in the US Army Reserves.
Jim’s cause of death has not been made public, as far as we know. Anne, on the other hand, has kept a quiet profile since her daughter’s death. She appears to be retired and still resides in Bella Vista.
