Alan left the professional restaurant business behind after working as a chef in some of the largest award-winning restaurants in the USA and combined his love of cooking, the outdoors, and writing. Due to his foraging background, Alan entered the untamed areas of Hardy Island in British Columbia with a clear idea of what he desired. Alan was traveling in the wilderness with Baha Mahmutov, a survivalist who was born and raised in Kyrgyzstan.
Alan and Baha were prepared to locate and gather the finest of what nature offers, with only 96 hours left. The two could locate thistle roots and huckleberries within the first few hours. However, Alan’s major objective was to locate Matsutake mushrooms; thus, he would not readily accept a less complicated solution. Even when Baha came upon Milkcap mushrooms, he gave up on them. Later, they discovered Angel Wing mushrooms in the woods, but Alan refused to take these, too. Alan was certain that he would only use chanterelles or matsutake mushrooms, despite Baha’s concerns that he had high expectations.
The fern that Baha and Alan had placed above their fire on one of the nights did burn down owing to embers, but otherwise, everything was OK. Baha and Alan decided to move near the ocean during low tide halfway through their wilderness expedition in search of some delectable seawater animals. They were able to gather a lot of shore crabs and Pacific oysters as a result. Additionally, the two found stinging nettles, which Alan was rather pleased about. Alan didn’t find the Golden Chanterelles he sought until the end.
Alan was prepared to prepare his food using his discoveries, and the elk ribs given to him, and his rival, Nico Albert, was happy with what he and Baha had found. Using Baha as his sous-chef, the culinary genius had four hours to prepare his feast. Alan served Wild Oyster Rockefeller as an appetizer, which was essentially a cooked oyster with a butter sauce made from cooked nettles and shore crab.
He offered roasted elk ribs as an appetizer and a prepared mélange of thistle roots and chanterelles from the woodland. A scrumptious Acorn flour crepe with huckleberries served as dessert rounded out the three-course dinner. Although it was a close call, judges Kiran Jethwa and Valerie Segrest chose Alan as the winner.
